No.. I didn't meet the Ghandi of geekdom personally...:(

But I *DID* go see him perform at Carrowinds in NC last night! :al:

Wow...

Just..

WOW

I knew I'd be in for a fun evening. I have listened to and owned every album he's ever made. Always missed him when he was in town. Almost missed him this time as well. My Wife was signed up for his mailing list made available on the official website, but it didn't give any updates. I found the tickets on sale by accident, woke the wife out of a sound sleep and let her know that we WERE GOING (she readily agreed and then cursed me repeatedly for making her too hyper to get back to sleep!)

yeah.. we're geeks and proud of it!!!:dp:

I gotta say that even though I'm a big fan, and I was excited just to be there.. Dammit, the man IMPRESSED me with his range and talent! The show was slick, smooth, fast paced and FUN AS HELL!!!

The songs sounded so perfect, so like the albums, that I started to figure on lipsyncing. But you can't bullshit a bullshitter. I've DONE lipsyncing onstage. Not only is the act of LS WAY harder than it looks, it's easy to spot once you know what to look for. If he WAS miming the mike, it was with such perfection and flair that he might as well have been singing. The band was simply phenomenal. They rocked OUT! The sound wasn't overwhelming like most Rock concerts, but when they wanted to wail THEY WAILED!!!

Any fan of AL knows he has a serious range of ability in reguards to the music he uses. It may be a simply play on words, sometimes, but he captures the FEEL of the artist he's playing around with. Rock, Pop, Rap, Hip Hop you name it, he did it. Al's voice was spot on all night. He also played guitar, keyboard and his mastery of the Accordian astounds me still!

The show started with an old favorite and quickly went to the new material off of the "Straight out of Lynwood" album. The Band performed about 3/4 of the material off said album, but they also tore a good chunk into Al's sizable base of songs. What he DIDN'T do, was let some of the repeat choruses of the older songs bore the audience. In a masterful weave of timing, he brought out one classic after another, and used the middle, end or breaks in the songs to smoothly move into song upon song upon song. Sometimes he'd just hit the first chorus and dim the lights, quickly starting another popular classic, much to the surprise and glee of the audience. Other times he'd use the two songs to weave situational humor between the two.

And then there were the breaks.

There had to be twenty costume changes.

No-one cared because there were three mammout screens showing bits and pieces of ALTV. Good GOD... Al can not only be funny.. HE CAN BE VICIOUS!!!

EminEm got pissy with Al's camp a few years ago. After greenlighting a successful and well recieved parody of "Lose yourself" only to demand he not make a video of the song.

HERE is the response (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHEFLLUMsdk)

OW...

And I know what he has against K-fed, same thing we all do..

but DAMN!!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9g89wNWoN4)

The capper to the night was after the concert. During the "All about the Pentiums" song, they let loose with a wave of fake bills, but the wife and I were about 30 seats too far away. When exiting, we got caught in the usual crush of crowd and had to wait. Lo and behold, past the security barrier was about ten- fifteen of the AL version of greenbacks! with... about thirty Al fans stretching their arms trying to reach them. All of the ones in HUMAN arm reach were gone, as well as the simian and Mr. Fantastic range bills. Being the suave, handsome, and experienced problem solver that I was (who said gaming had no real life benifit...) I simply whipped my belt off, snagged a bill and giggled at all the fat guys struggling with their belt buckles while I gave my lovely wife her prize!!

:al:

In conclusion... If he's in your town, GO SEE WEIRD AL!! (but don't trust the website!!)

I've never seen him perform, but I DID have him as a customer. Back in 2004 he performed at the Skyline stage at Chicago's Navy Pier. I was working at the Navy Pier Build-A-Bear Workshop at the time. He came in dressed like you'd expect him to be. Nobody in the store had a clue as to who he was, except myself and one other person. We showed him around the store, explained the bear-making process, and made sure he and his family had as fun a time as possible.

The kicker is that the assistant manager that left us the week before to manage another shop, was a HUGE fan. She nearly died when we called her and told her who she missed. :D
