Hey all. I started a comic strip a few months back called Kastle Comics. It's all about me and the comic book store I work at and, sometimes unfortunately, it's all true! There's some pretty hilarious business that goes down behind the scenes at a comic book shop, and here I am to bare it all.

Behold, life from the other side of the counter.

Kastle Comics! (http://kastlecomics.comicgenesis.com)

Really, I'm mostly posting this here because The Devil's Panties was the number one biggest influence on me when I decided to start this comic strip. I've always wanted to do a regularly-updating comic, but all my ideas seemed lacking somehow, or I could never really get into it all the way. After reading The Devil's Panties, I had this sudden epiphany that I don't need to be an amazing writer or come up with world-shaking plots and prophecies and whatever, because stuff happens around me all the time that people apparently get a kick out of.

I admit, when I started the strip, my goal was to be just like The Devil's Panties, but after a week or two of drawing strips, I finally settled into my groove, and now I think Kastle Comics has grown into its own entity. I have been told by other people, however, that if you like reading things like The Devil's Panties or Girls With Slingshots, you'll get a kick out of Kastle Comics.

With this comment, you've insured we'll all come visit ;)

Oh, and btw...

*Pounce Da Newbie!*
:dgrin:

Hiya! :D

Peeks nose out of room. ZOMG! It's a NEWBIE!!!!!

Thumpa Thumpa Thumpa Thumpa

*runs past newbie*

cRaSh

grrr

*Pushes off wall*

*Aiming at noobie...*

You see a small creature smiling maniacally, and feel fear. This is something you've never encountered before, and it looks as though the creature is probably crazier than the Cheshire Cat.

Mwuahahahaha

And here we go...

Aiming...

Wiggle-butt...

Tail-twitch...

Runs at newbie...

Bypasses newbie, going at Mach 2, flies around corner...

Runs back around corner, putting the fear of Kitten into all watching...

POuNce dA nOobIE!!!!!

Here *tosses fluffy tribbles at newbie* Use these to distract the others.

Or pudding. Pudding works well with this crowd.

I know this is a double-post, but I feel my pouncing should stand on it's own.

http://kastlecomics.comicgenesis.com/d/20080212.html OMG I know that feeling. Mine is also usually filled with splinters from the weird woven seats on the store's stools.

Is that a challenge?

*starts making a list*

Haha, bring it on. Do your worst! I can take it! I'm five feet of solid iron will!

KiaKat

Hmm...tasty skull, though I might have trouble getting to the brain...

Anyone want to help? Pounce the newbie and help get her organs!

This just might come in handy around here.

The newbie likes her organs right where they are. I think I might need those later in life or something.

Ooh, nifty! I'm assuming here that these are standard issue for everyone who joins this forum?

KiaKat

Actually, the sparkly mongooses (don't ask) and the riot gear are.

And sometimes rubber duckies.

Oh, and pudding and jello. Those are required.

Nope but they should be.
I got pounced by a hypersonic KiaKat earlier.
Heh, I have a redheaded daughter. Pouncing is something I got used to a long time ago, although KiaKat does do an outstanding newbie-pounce.

Evandril
05-06-2008, 07:29 PM
Heh...They are sooo cute at this stage *steps carefully AWAY from ground zero*

FYI, *I* wouldn't have issued that challenge...Which says just a bit, once you know me ;)

Edit: GAH! Delay in posting, somehow...This was in relation to her challenge ;)

KiaKat
05-06-2008, 07:29 PM
Why thank you!

I try *blush*

I've had good inspiration. CrazeyAl has a good one, and I think it was TNT who used to have a good one too...but he disappeared. So I've taken over the colourful pounces :D

It helps that I have two psychokitties at home who provide the visual. All I have to do is transcribe their wrestling matches.

Ninjashira
05-06-2008, 07:31 PM
It was a pretty impressive pounce. I've never seen one quite as colorful before. Or loud. It's hard to be loud without any words, but she pulled it off splendiferously.

KiaKat
05-06-2008, 07:47 PM
Ev, you know me too well. I don't think I could break you, at least not without having you in the same physical room as me. Then it would be far too easy.

However, seeing as how I'm currently considering how to find a hamsterball large enough for my 14lb fluffy-as-hell cat, I think I could probably figure out how to answer the challenge issued by the newbie.

In terms of catnip...I'm mostly indifferent, unless there's someone to wrestle for it.

Pudding - only if it's Tipouf-, Shea-, or Asianmommy-flavoured. Well, there might be a couple other flavours I enjoy, but those are my favourites.

It must be show.

Pony up! We've seen guys in dresses, and, um...guys in dresses....and....well, let's just say we've seen a few things that would be classified as embarrassing to most *normal* people.

We're not normal, as I'm sure you've guessed :D

Ninjashira
05-06-2008, 08:06 PM
Well, unfortunately for you guys, I don't actually have a copy of the picture. Everyone at the store EXCEPT me has the picture. So the world will have to suffer in ignorance.

Then allow me to ruin your life!
This is divided into the ones that I actually read and the ones whose addresses I still have for some weird reason.

http://angels2200.com/ - Angels 2200 (on a long hiatus)
http://www.frozenreality.co.uk/comic/bunny/ - the Bunny (usually no continuity at all)
http://www.crfh.net/ - College Roomies From Hell (lacking in cute cthulhu geishas so far)
http://fuddafudda.com/ - Deathworld (which goes downhill a bit once the chickens disappear)
http://devilspanties.keenspot.com/ - ... well ... yeah
http://eddirt.frozenreality.co.uk/ - Edible Dirt (drawn by a relative of the artist of FLEM! You have been warned. )
http://www.elgoonishshive.com/ - El Goonish Shive (sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious, sometimes full of furry sex-change filler)
http://www.go-girly.com/ - Girly (This was good at first but, really, Josh has been involved in a nasty accident or a bad experiment or something.)
http://www.misfile.com/ - Misfile (Car obsessive but he's good.)
http://nekothekitty.net/ - Neko the Kitty (adorable but now updating three times a year or so.)
http://www.punchanpie.net/cgi-bin/autokeenlite.cgi - Punch an' Pie (Angela from Queen Of Wands has her own comic!)
http://www.questionablecontent.net/ - Questionable Content (Indy music refs, sex and scathing sarcasm.)
http://somethingpositive.net/ - You already know this one, right?
http://www.thewotch.com/ - The Wotch
http://twolumps.keenspot.com/ - Two Lumps (Cats, actually. Sort of biographical.)
http://xkcd.com/ - xkcd (depth, sarcasm, romance, maths, some surreal stuff.)

***

Okay, so the list of links I keep around but don't check every day isn't on this computer. Erm ... well, there's www.queenofwands.net ... erm ... No Need For Bushido (updates far too slowly) ... Chugworth Academy (I dropped it when that "pancake m_____f_____s" crap appeared and haven't missed it) ... erm ... Elf Life (only for the sprite, which should tell you how good the rest of it was) ... and ... erm ... well ... heh ... y'know, stuff.

Add to that www.flemcomics.com as I seem to keep having reasons to point people at particular ones ...

I'll check this list against my bookmarks when I get home and add in a few more.

Lose them or loose them on another store by saying, "Get the hell outta mine!"?

It's amazing what people in "geek culture" (comics/RPGs/video games/etc) get into their heads as acceptable behavior. They don't realize that good customer service is a two way street.

Eczema... poor him and poor you.

Psoriasis, probably.

Eczema doesn't usually come off that bad - only on my scalp is it that bad, and that's cause I was using the wrong shampoos for years. Finally found out that I should be using Sodium Laureth/Laurel Sulfate-FREE soaps.

Either way, though, did he have no shame? I wear long sleeves most of the year because of how weird my arms look with the eczema rash.

And the sniffling was just gross.

Back to the comic in question, and the recent arc of the lesbian having a crush:

is it just me, or would women welcome a crush from a lesbian more likely that a man welcoming a crush from a gay man ?

Then again, perhaps the available sampling of womanfolk around here will skew the data somewhat.

IMO, the guys who are most bothered by gays are the ones who know how *they* treat people they are attracted to...And the idea of being treated like that scares 'em. *shrugs*

As you can guess, my opinion of those idiots isn't the highest in the world ;)

If a guy had a crush on me, I'd be flattered, I mean, I dont have that many people crushing over me that I can be picky :p

I don't think you can characterize someone based upon whether or not they like or dislike the idea or action of someone of the same sex hitting on them. Broad sweeping generalizations like this only serve to marginalize people for ridicule. It's like zealot peace activists who call our military servicemen and women murderers and baby killers. A pretty unfair generalization don't you think?

Well, was speaking from my experience solely. I do know that the large majority of the guys I know who are most bothered by the idea of another guy hitting on them...do NOT treat women well. I'm talking the 'He hit on me, so I'm going to hit HIM' end of the spectrum there, btw, not just the 'Eww, guy hitting on me, ick' types.

Now my pool of people I'm around on a regular basis is fairly limited, honestly, so that could have something to do with it. I know society as a whole has far more bias against male/male relationships than female/female... So by that, would be more 'normal' to be bothered by a guy hitting on you, if you're male.

Edit: Re-read my orignal post, and realized I forgot the qualifier 'most'...My apologies :)

Ok, being in the military yourself, I can understand your bias. The pool of people you're drawing from has a different social dynamic than civilian society.

I have a whole response to this about homophobia and the reasons for it, but I can't get my words to work correctly.

Mainly, that I believe most homophobes are either repressing their own desires (which is kind of a 'duh' statement) or are unwilling to be seen as anything other than a 'typical' member of their sex. Luckily for women, even the girliest girl is still able to find another woman attractive, and is able to sleep with her, without being thought of as 'less' of a woman.

And here's where my problem begins. I know how the thoughts look in my head, but they don't want to make sense when written. Either way, this is a topic that has been explored by sociologists and psychiatric researchers. They know how, they know why, but society is still unable to 'fix' the bias and the homophobia. It does seem to get better as time goes on, however.

Aye, and I briefly confused having been lots of places to having more experience with people outside the military...hence my clarification, after being rightfully called on my mistake :)

Generally, anyone I'm interacting with enough to get a good feel for how they would react either is someone I'm working with, or a friend of mine...and I'm picky about my friends, as a whole ;)

Edit for Kia's quick posting: It also doesn't help that for a nice chunk of America's history...Sex in ANY form was 'bad', and should only be tolerated for the purpose of having kids. With that bias, that makes homosexual sex the 'worst' type, since kids cannot result.

It is actually a statistic that most clinical homophobes are repressing their own homosexual feelings because of the views that they were raised with.

And I've also been noticing recently that straight guys that tend to joke about their own sexuality are a lot more fun than guys who don't. Or even guys that just make sex(uality) jokes at all. I think it just shows how comfortable they are with themselves and how open minded or at-ease they are in life.

Silly puritans...

Don't know if 'silly' is the right tag there, seeing the damage done, and being done, by them.

anyway, I think Kia's concept of the male being lead to fit into the 'typical dude' imagery by society is a definite bias.

I didn't say it was all men. I was speaking of a specific 'type' of homophobe, which is the type I've run into often, especially out in the middle of nowhere.

DrT

No. I did.

It's an pull that, I think, all males feel sooner or later: the need to fit with the image of the 'male' displayed everywhere (TV, media, whatnot). That male is not homosexual, and might actually be homophobic. Or the homophobie comes from the repressed desire for that 'male' image, ie: desire for another guy, ie: homosexuality.
I won't defend that theorie much, because I can't back it up. But it's a pretty one.

The fact is that most intelligent males can shrug off that pull towards a 'perfect male' without a second though. But the pull is there.

Oh.

*headdesk*

I'm just doing *so* well with interpretation of what I'm reading. This is the third time this week I've misinterpreted what someone said.

That's it. I'm going back to hiding. I'll re-emerge after the weekend.
