This year hasn't been good to RPG'ers. Gary Gygax passed away, as did Tom Moldvay and Mr. Bledsaw of Judge's Guild. Well, one more great has passed on. Erick Wujcik, who penned the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RPG, Ninjas & Superspies, and Amber Diceless Role-playing has finally succumbed to his cancer last night.
My personal experiences with Erick are somewhat limited, but they were significant to a young gamer like I was back then. Erick was not above personally answering questions about his games. I remember getting a letter in the mail from Erick many years ago that answered a question I had about Ninjas & Superspies. A friend of mine had been trying to convince me that stacking the various bonuses from different martial arts was "realistic" (personally, I think he wanted a combat god at low levels). Erick's reply was that was not the case because the mindset for each style was completely different.
I also bumped into him once or twice at Dragon*Con and Origins. Gonna miss him as a lot of older gamers are.
