TROLL PHYSIOLOGY: THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Firstly it is important to note as previously discussed on page 3039, Trolls are creatures not merely animal, vegetable and mineral as well, which reflects their role in nature as protectors and therefore their curculatory system reflects these aspects as well.
Where as most other creatures have a single circulatory system cotaining some form of blood (or in the case of Gnomes, creamy nougat), Trolls in fact have two circulatory systems, one containing sap, the other being a fine black powder that most closely resembles toner.
The heart is the central part of these two systems and is composed of a large Amethyst about the size of a cantelope which glows and pulses under it's own power. Like any other part of a Troll's anatomy, the heart is removable as well as capable of being grafted back into place (see page 3057 for more information on this subject).
As with any heart, it is the key to the survival of any living creature. Unlike most other creatures, a Trolls ability to remove body parts allows for the heart to exist outside of the body, and still perform it's function, no matter how far it may be from the body. In olden days, it was tradition to remove one's heart on bury it where no one could find it, but this practice did not last long, for one too many times a heart was found by chance by a random miner, and broken.
Heart breaking is the worst of all things for Trolls, as the heart is not only the central part of the circulatory system, but it is also the key to a Troll's immortality. Break a Troll's heart and he will eventually die.
It is for this reason that Trolls guard their hearts as their most prized possesion. Yet, Trolls are not immune to the effects of love. They are, however, known to only give their heart to someone they truly trust and love, who they trust with their immortality itself. They rip their chest open, and literally hand them their heart. From that point on, the heart is the responsibility of this person. If that person neglects, discards or breaks the heart then the Troll will become that most pitifull and horrible of creatures - the Heartless Troll.
A Heartless Troll, more commonly know as an Ogre, is a creature of mortal kind, filled with rage and sorrow the likes of which no motral creature can imagine. Mad with anger and pain, they destroy all in their path. It is the visualsimilarity between the Troll and the Ogre that has led mortal man to fear them and shun them both equally.
It is an unfortunate truth that the reason that Trolls are so rare a creature in this day and age, is due to the breaking of hearts, one by one, over the centuries.
