Gentles.

If you happen to be going to Pennsic, I would like to invite you to come and take part in a fund raiser for the Beaver County Women's Center.

Here's their website

http://www.womenscenterbc.org/

I need to say that I am not in any way associated with the Women's Center. Heck, they probably have never heard of me.

Pennsic is a function of the Society for Creative Anacronism, which is a really big Larp that I have been playing with for about twenty years.

Anyway, it's a Drag Race. The idea is that we have a course (it's about 3K I think) that we walk or run in "Clothing inappropriate to our gender". That's why it's called a drag race. There is a five dollar entry donation, with additional donations accepted.

Anyway, the idea is to have a little fun at our own expense, and to do some good in the world. The fastest runner will be declared "The Pennsic 37 Protector of Women" and the person who raises the most money for the women's center will be declared "The Pennsic 37 Champion of Ladies".

The race will start at the top of the parking lot hill, near (but not too near) the entrance to the Tuchux encampment. It will proceed down the main road, past the Eastrealm royal encampment, and down Horde Hill. It will cross through the Confed encampment, and across a foot bridge into the Clovensheild encampment. Dreadlord Nissan of Clovensheild has promised umbrella drinks for all the runners.

The donation box and sign in sheet will be at the start of the race, and will be available at the end of the race.

It is not required that you run the whole way, or even run at all to participate. It appears that a large number of the "runners" are planning on walking the entire way, sampling various drinks along the route.

Because we want to maximize donations, Kilts will be considered gender inappropriate for both men and women. You can wear them. It is recommended that guys wear something for support under the kilt, as a three KM run with no support can be quite uncomfortable.

Because the route passes through several camps where there are kids, everybody is required to be "street legal" in their costumes. That "Registered Sex Offender" tag is hard to wash off.

Because the route is along gravel roads and paths, good footwear for running is required. No Pumps. Sorry, boys.

Women are encouraged to run as well. Since women wearing men's clothes isn't very funny, women are encouraged to camp it up somehow. Massive codpieces or fake beards are recommended.

The race will be starting just after dark on Wednesday, August 6th.

Thanks.

If you aren't going to Pennsic, sorry for the spam.

Hey Freiman,

Did you post this on the Legio Draconis site?

Yes, Please!

It is a light weight thing. It is not meant to be a great chivalric quest or anything. Just an excuse for some lighthearted fun.

Well, we raised 378.45 $(US) for the women's center.

I was unable, however, to get pictures.

Oh gross.

That green is a terrible shade.

Well, yeah.

But, honestly, protecting women that need it really tickles my "I am a macho guy" side, and doing it in a way that makes people laugh is kind of cool too.

My personal fantasy just doesn't work unless I am actually doing something that is good for others.

And thanks, everybody. If you thought it was funny, the women's center certainly needs more donations. You don't need to be there to do it.

Tell 'em freiman sent you.

OK, I got somebody on another message board to send me another pic.

A little explanation is sort of required for this pic. Because we got no advance press on site on the drag race, but a lot of buzz on the internet ahead of time, we decided to do a "parade" to let folks know that the event was happening after all.

This picture was taken in the food court. We (about fifteen of us) marched through the food court (about twenty food stalls, probably five hundred people) singing "I feel pretty, I feel pretty" (from "my fair lady"). We probably marched twice the distance of the race around the site singing. It worked. We picked up probably twenty people along the route, including two women in boy clothes with eyebrow pencil moustaches on. We called them both "Bob".

We told folks "This is the drag race to support the Beaver County Women's Center. You can be the sort of guy who protects battered women, or you can be the sort of guy who doesn't. Your call."

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/7416/dragracexw1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This pic was taken in the food court. The fellow with the six pack and the pig tails was Gawain of Southern Wood, who is a high school sportsman of some kind (probably freaking cross country, nobody could come close to keeping up with him). He was the fastest runner of the day. Because of this, he was styled (by me) the "Pennsic 37 protector of women". Malcomb from camp "Little India" raised the most money, so he was styled (by me) as the "Pennsic 37 Champion of Ladies". And, running against him, I can tell you that he was a goddamm machine. He showed no fatigue, and no pain. I think that he could have run ten miles, with me panting and gasping behind him the entire way.

It was a good time, and we did something good.

I am proud of it.

But, seriously, if you have an extra ten bucks this paycheck, the Women's Center could use it. They have a wish list that contains night shirts, underwear (new), Shampoo and conditioner, toilet paper, bus tickets, feminine hygiene needs, and just about everything else that is required to make a new life.

They also need toys and diapers, and just about everything else that a child might need.

Here's a link.

They can accept USPS money orders.

*drools...then rereads* Wait? High School? "I feel dirty, oh so dirty!"

Very cool though Freiman *checks out the site* Not this check, but the next one (rent was on this one)

*whispers "It's West Side Story, not My Fair Lady"*

Trust me Falconess, he wants to feel dirty with you. He's seventeen. He wants to feel dirty with any lady that is willing. For as long as she is able.

Plus, well, he's young and strong. I can personally vouch for his ability to keep exerting energy for long periods of time. Goodness knows that I couldn't come close to keeping up with him, and I run every day. He's a fraggin' monster.

All of this is moot, however, none of us will be able to find him until he has reached and passed his eighteenth birthday, long before next year at Pennsic.

But, I do have contact info for his aunt, who is a US marine. If you like, I will pass along your words to her, and thus to his dad, who is also a US marine. I am positive that they will be met with good grace, and I am positive that they will be welcomed. Whether or not the young man will receive them, I cannot say. I am willing to bet that he will be teased about it, especially by his younger sister, who is a year younger than he.

Want me to pass it on?

All teasing aside, thanks for being willing to help the shelter. I have never met the folks who run it. I am male, and they don't need to be opening their doors to males in their business. There is nothing wrong with males, but theirs is a special case. Women screw up too, but a battered women's shelter is a good thing to have around just in case.

But, even two or three bucks will help. I don't really have a clue how much a diaper costs, but I am betting it's in that range. I know that they would love to have the cost of a set of sweat pants.

thanks

Actually, having a man around who is capable of listening, shutting up and paying attention, and possibly taking the male children out for a game of baseball or soccer would probably be appreciated.

The women may have been abused, but that doesn't mean they're terrified of all men. If you're really interested in helping, contact them and find out if they need any volunteers to help with the older kids. It might go over very well.

Kia,

I agree with you.

But this particular charity has not responded to a single email that I have sent. They have responded to emails sent by women I have asked to do it, but not to any emails that I have sent. I have sent six. They have responded to every note sent by my female friends in a timely and professional fashion.

They may respond if I send a seventh, but instead I am looking for a new charity for next year.

This does NOT mean that they are not doing their job, or that they are not worthy of support.

It does mean that I will be fundraising for the whoever the local VFW is supporting next year. I need certain things (like the "we got the money" note) to make sure that things work out.

The shelter does good work. One of the women who helped organize the race (and deliver the money) have needed shelter in the past.

They're just a little skittish, so to speak. They probably have good reason. It doesn't matter one way or another. I don't need that sort of reinforcement to make my fantasy work. I simply have to be working to help others.

And there is the matter of the Atlantic ocean between they and I. I cannot take the boys to the baseball game. I am only in their area for a few days a year. Normally, I live in Germany. I just can't do it.

Freiman, when people ask me, "How can I be better within the Society?"
I point at you and say, "Be like Freiman. But not just within the SCA. Be like Freiman every day. For by doing so you enrich us all."

You're one of the good ones Bruder. I pledge to be more like you in my life.
