You'll notice that I was turned slightly toward him when he grabbed me. I was able to strike him in the ribs to loosen his grip on my head. Actually it was during training exercise and had he been going full speed at that point, my kneck would have been broken. In this case I tapped out.

I've actually worked with some of the older units. Guess they had them laying around. and yeah.. it's a clack, but there's that whirring sound still. It's a small generator to produce the voltage for the explosive cap.

the great thing about it is that babysitting helps you use your maternal instincts without the joys of birth and 3 am feedings. you get to play mommy (or daddy) but you don't have to keep it for 18 years or spend outrageous amounts of money on it. AND you salvage mommy and daddy's sanity for a few hours.

Actually, by the Viking Age, horns on helmets had gone out of fashion for ceremonial purposes - that was mainly in the Bronze Age (they have some gorgeous helmets at the Danish National Museum).

Occasionally down to user-deleted posts. The default is that a user can delete their post, but it's still on the list for admins etc, so it is actually still there. However, when it shows the page to a standard forumer, it counts ten at a time, but it knows there's another post there - it throws off the count.

Also, when someone's on a universal ignore list so nobody can see their posts...

Old Norse 'skra' meant skin or hide, right? I know in modern scandanavian, skral means scrawny. But that's of more recent origin than the name/title of skraeling.

The three cousins closest to me in age became fathers over the summer, and...well...both older cousins' wives decided it was a good idea to induce labor a few days before the predicted due date(both first-pregnancy babies, which tend (in our family, at least) to be late arrivals), and the younger cousin's girlfriend had a c-section. Of the two cousins-in-law, one got about halfway through labor and announced that she didn't want to be pregnant after all, she'd changed her mind.

Anthony was 6 lbs 9 oz. We were lucky that his delivery was relatively quick. His mom's water broke at a little after seven on Nov 26, 1998 (Thanksgiving Day). He was born in time to have his first Thanksgiving Dinner... straight from the tap. :) What was funny about the whole thing was that A)Lena, his mom, told me the night before that she hope'd he wouldn't arrive on that day and B)It was either I and her mom or I and her dad driving back and forth between the hospital and her place to check on the birds in the oven. Anthony will be nine at the end of this month.

this had been the first halloween Bri-Bri (the new big sis) got to have because of some medical conditions with her heart last year, and well she was determined to trick or treat with her. even though me and my mother were herding 4 other kids between 1 and 6 years old, and her daddy was with us. we kept asking her to tell us when to head back, but she was actually pushing us onward.

despite explanations that the next neighbourhood and the one after that and so forth hadn't had candy since we moved in 18 years ago....

Dear gods! Yes, that is true on all counts!

I was one of the only non islanders who got invited to their pig roasts on base. These roasts usually took up the entire volleyball field. Holy crap was that a lot of food every time.

Though the scariest thing was when a few of them decided that I was okay to date one of the samoan females who was stationed in a nearby base.
