signing up next paycheck that isn't for covering bills. Room-wise, waiting on the rates to be released for the Hilton, and trying not to put the cart ahead of the horse as far as roomie-expectations go, since a lot can happen in a year.
For now, though...back to cleaning. Visitors arrive in less than 48 hours!

Interesting... I tried to abuse the corporate reservation system at work to get a room reserved, and it looks like the entire Marriott is booked solid. Suites, rooms, the lot. Methinks the devious Dragon*Con management have reserved the whole place for their group booking codes this time.
I've sent an enquiry off the hotel reservation desk to find out if it's a blackout for group booking codes or real guests really booking rooms. I'll post the reply if I get one.
Because if they haven't, I'm somewhat screwed for rooms there, and I've learned not to go near the Hyatt, unless they sack the fire marshal. (Who fires the fire marshal?)
The Hilton has rooms left but no suites that I can find.
Soooo.... Book the Hilton, where the staff were a touch below competent but I know there's a room, or wait for the group booking codes for Marriott to be published and hope I was right?

I believe D*C has most of the suites booked for group codes because they go real quick and tend to be offered to the special GoH's

OK, first layer of callcentre droids encountered.
You have reached Marriott's central Internet Customer Care department. We believe that you may be inquiring about a group at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. Unfortunately we do not have any information regarding "Dragon Con" at this time. You may want to check back with us or contact your group coordinator for further information.
Regarding your question about "no availability", you will receive this response if you the dates that you have selected or the rate you are requesting is not available. You may want to try alternate dates or locations.
I've sent a nice polite "yes, but WHY is there no availability" reply. Don't want to end up on Rapscallion's "Customers suck" board now, do I?
It appealed to my sense of humour that my enquiry was answered by a Ms. Moroney.... am I bad?

They wrote back quickly this time.
Please know that it was not our intent to insult you in any way. We do appreciate your business and your faithful use of Marriott brand properties. Please be assured, we understand the value of your business and hope to keep it.
At this time, our records indicate there are five groups booked at the
Atlanta Marriott Marquis during the Labor Day season. Please be aware, this may be what is causing the sold out status as of now. We are unable to determine how many regular guests have reserved a guest room for the dates of your intended travel. For the most updated status regarding your request, we invite you to contact the hotel directly and speak with a sales associate. We have provided the contact information below:
Point to Sehson, you're right. No idea who the other 4 groups are, or it could be five Dragon*Con related groups, for guests, staff, exhibitors, dealers, and civilians? Just a wild guess.
Anyhoo, looks like I'll be camping on the Dragon*Con website until I see the new booking codes, sometime next year.

As of right now, the cheapest flight on Orbitz.com around that time frame is $222. This is just a guesstimate since their booking system won't let me beyond September 29. That's with one stopover. Nonstop is $262. Wait another week and you should be able to get a more accurate figure. You'll pay more than that for gas, food, and lodgings on the way down and back.

If you have the princess out fit done, maybe you could morph it into "The Fabreeze Fairy"? Add some glittery wings and a couple bottles of Fabreeze (or something like that) and hit the dealers' room and gaming rooms. Some areas in those two rooms need the assist.
A couple of ladies did something similar with the "Con Cleanliness Patrol" and gave out moist towelettes & such to folks waiting for elevators in the Hyatt. Another girl had something on her T-shirt about HFTW (hygeine for the win).
... Do "HER" Cause the costume is all boobs and butts and skin.

Nothing, But I encourage teh cuties to cosplay what they want, not nescisarily what teh fanbois want.
If a cutie wan't to cosplay something sexilicious it's all good:drool: but if they only want to cosplay something a bit tamer its good to.

It's really a crapshoot. Since there are so many outfits and motifs one can use when portraying Dawn, it's hard to narrow one style down.
The fact you know who the character is gives you mucho mega points in my book. The last few years ... have been painful. As some others here can attest, there are girls entering the Dawn contest without even knowing who the character is.

Oh yes, I know Dawn. I've been a fan for years. (You will notice my avatar...) And being a redhead myself...it only seems natural...Although, I guess if half the contestants haven't a clue that's only half as many folks I have to compete against.

The one I witnessed, had several runners-up/honorable mentions.
but the prizes goto those that capture the spirit of Dawn in the design they are presenting. The detail also helps. The year I saw it the girl, that won did Spider goddess dawn, Had eight arms and was real cool, second place was a guy. Both were incredibly detailed.
Lizner(sp) is the primary judge... Originality also counts seeing as the contest has been going on for years.

12-11-2007, 02:33 AM
Uhm, there's lots of stuff about Dragon*Con on-line. My best advise is if you want to stay in one of the host hotels, book your room NOW. You have to call the hotels directly in order to get the convention rate.
IMHO, Hyatt has the worst elevators in the history of conventions. Definitely recommend getting a room on the lower levels as all elevators get very busy during the masquerades and parties.
Costumes? You name it, it's there. I only got stumped three times the entire weekend. I think the best costumes are the more obscure characters, original twists on a theme, and scantily-clad. But showing too much skin isn't always a good thing. Competition is super fierce for the Dawn-Look-A-Like contest as it's a big draw and a $1000 grand prize. Check out some of the photo sites (Flickr, Webshots, Photobucket) and the D*C fan site links (on D*C's website) for a taste of what people dress up as.
Choose what panels & parties you want to attend ahead of time and have at least two back-ups as the cool parties get filled early and/or shut down early. The popular panels get filled early as well - especially the ones the guests are speaking at (i.e., Claudia Black, Firefly cast, James Marsters, etc.).
I usually start up a D*C fund in January so that I have spending money for all the cool goodies in the dealers' and exhibitors' halls.
Bring a camera or camcorder & lots of film, batteries, and/or memory cards. There's just some stuff that you won't be able to describe or remember that you'll need documented proof of. Trust me on this one. ;)
Oh yeah, POUNCES the newbie!!!!

hmmm...if i get a job in january, then i might be able to go to this dragon con.

RazorJAK
12-12-2007, 10:10 AM
There MIGHT be floorspace for a small fee.
Of course, as Al can attest to ... being in the room that Moo, Digi and I usually squat in can end up involving wardrobe malfunctions.
Which, coincidentally enough, is how Digi reminded Voltaire of who she was when she and her boytoy booked him to play in Buffalo early last year.
RazorJAK
12-12-2007, 10:31 AM
.... snipping Grey's advice ...
If you can manage it ( due to taking a bus or train ... or driving ) bring a cooler for your room. Most of the rooms don't have fridges. And those that do usually are charged a convenience fee.
Bring some type of vitamin C and some type of AIRBORNE! clone. Nothing is better than a great convention. Nothing is worse than the convention crud you get from being exposed to that many different geeks for that length of time ... all while abusing your body with alcohol, caffeine and sugar. STAY HEALTHY!
Water water water ... WATER!
Eat at least one good meal a day ... and maintain your energy throughout the day with decent snack sized meals if you can manage it. (- individual packs of trailmix etc etc etc kept on your person is a GOOD thing -)
Sleep at LEAST two hours a day. I don't mean take eight fifteen minute naps. Sleep at LEAST two hours straight everyday. Conserve your energy by taking small naps when you can over and above the two hours.
Have a good attitude. Have patience. But have no hesitation in telling someone if they've crossed the line with you. There are THOUSANDS of geeks from all parts of the world there each year. Not every social custom is universal.
HAVE FUN

the latex strip stuff? its sticky to itself but not to you? that stuff is badass.
Sehson

No the latex stuff would work too but that tends to be strechy and it rolls easy.
There is tape its made out of the same type of plastic a colorforms so it sticks to itself but thats it since it doesn't have adhesive it definately doesnt stick to skin. A couple of wraps and body parts are bound real good simply unwind and free. not to mention the stuff is reusable.
Leffy
12-26-2007, 04:56 PM
oooh that stuff. i've seen it advertised more for other forms of body bondage. like a do it yourself corset without the tubing or lacings. just wrap it up tight. saw it at 3 am on some channel as part of some freaky fashion show thingy. the dude was explaining what they were doing to chica using a nude color to go under her dress and help make the form complete, they'd lightly covered her body in baby oil, just enough to keep her from chafing but not enough to make her shiney and slick, and when they were done wrapping they'd used a hair dryer to sort of shrink wrap it a bit and make it more firm. it looked like fun!

The Days Inn (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-397655-days_inn_atlanta_downtown-i?fromiy=1) is where I'm staying. It's almost as close as the host hotels, and it's $50 cheaper. The hotel was in a bit of flux last time I stayed there(bit dirty, hotel restaurant was being reconstructed, etc), and it's NOT exactly the Ritz... But I've stayed WAY offsite, in a host hotel, and here. I am RETURNING to the Days Inn.

I linked elsewhere to a previous thread where you mentioned spunk. I hope you don't mind. It came up.
It has a way of doing that.
Anyway ... bad puns aside ...
I don't know how to make liqueur chocolates. I suspect there's some weird special trick involved to prevent the booze soaking out or dissolving the chocolate or something. You may have to individually wrap them to prevent evaporation from the surface and resultant leeching of constituents onto the surface (as in the yellow ring around each armpit after wearing one shirt through a three-day exercise, but tastier).
However, now that I've spoiled your appetites I think I can safely say that Anton Berg (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Anton+Berg+liqueur+chocolates) do a nice enough range of them, even if you do tend to buy an awfully neat display box for a small mass of actual cacao. They each have a miniature of the authentic label on the foil, too, so you know which you're getting.

The Anton Berg ones are my favourites. Though I've come across other brands that are just as good.
The best way to make them is to gelatinize the alcohol and then mould the chocolate with the gel in the middle. I've made them a couple of times, though they always leave something to be desired. I think I leave out too much sugar and use chocolate that's too sweet, so the combination isn't quite right.

THe DC host hotels are here. (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_location.php#Host_Hotels)
The DC LiveJournal group is here (http://community.livejournal.com/dragoncon/)
The Shearton was just added and MIGHT still have rooms. All host hotels are at $150 a night if you get the con rate.
There is also a community for people who have to bail out/switch hotels/need roomates to share the cost (http://community.livejournal.com/dragonconrooms/). (it's inactive now.. wait till about a month before DC and it goes WILD!!)
Orrr you can do what I did and hit Hotels.com (http://www.hotels.com) and get a nearby hotel for a good deal less. Why pay 5 star prices when you won't be doing anything but sleeping a few hours and then running right out??

Hints to new Dragon Congoers:4-2-1
Remember that sleep is good, try to get 4 hours a night. Fun is less so if you can't stand up (Unless a bottle of Jack is involved)
2 meals a day (not jsut consuite, even thought Joe IS a god)
1 shower a day is a MUST. trust me.
If you're coming for the panels, look over your con guide with your friends and see what's there that you like, remember that you won't be able to see everything, but with some happy planning you'll be able to see quite a bit.
The more popular panels you'll want to get there at least 30 minutes early for good seating, and remember that events such as the Dawn contest, costume contest and Masquerade ARE all broadcast on Dragon con TV

As I erroneously sent to Jennie tonight when trying to tell a friend, I'm altering the honey liquor recipe for a rum base instead of vodka.
Good news! I WILL be able to bring the booze in my checked luggage for the trip to Atlanta! (I triple checked the ASA allowances for boozahol in luggage - No more than 5 liters total in all baggage, can not be over 140 proof)
If the honey liquor is deemed "Not as good as it could be" it may end up being shelved and set to mellow for 2009 with some friends who live in Atlanta, but I'mhoping that 3 1/2 months is enough time

Actually, that's easier and harder to find than you'd think. If yer a swinger (and I mean that in the slimiest sense) there are a few public and not-so-private groups that advertise on the net. I wouldn't go near them if I was 15, full of spanish fly and wrapped in mylar head to toe.. but tha's just me.
Finding a room party that isn't shut down 1/2 hour into it, can be a bit daunting if you are simply wading through the crowd and looking for a good time. The best advice I could give?? FOLLOW THE TITS!!! someone with double d's is GONNA get invited to a party, sooner rather than later!

Leffy - you are formally requested to show up. 'Nuff said!
One of these days I'll meet Shea and Kitty!
Al - I hear ya on the whole wrapped in mylar thing. The "Con Sluts" party sounded interesting but even to this open minded guy, their stuff (along with some of the "Wolf Pack" party tricks) was a bit too much. And getting the Eternal Membership is soooo worth it! :neener:
Jak - I lay odds on Al's wife winning on Thursday night. I remember the shot he had of her doing the "rolling eyes 'why haven't I killed this man yet?' look." Just give it up, you can't win against that "look." Many have tried. All have failed.
I'm bringing a D*C virgin this year. If anyone wants to throw any cute girls who like geeky girls her way, it would be greatly appreciated. Or girls who like geeky guys at me, we're negotiable on this. :D There's never a problem with picking up strange women... as long as you put them back where you found them once done. :dgrin:
I'll be getting there Thursday and will be at the Marriott. Don't know about extra bed space as Marriott's being stingy with the double beds or else I'd offer up space. *shrugs*
Is there a plan for a meet-up? My recommendation is around noon on Friday at Jennie's table. It's not too early but not too crazy yet.

Too early for me this time...picking up sister involves not leaving Columbia til 2pm Friday at the earliest. Friday evening might work ok, though, or anytime Saturday...I didn't sign up for any panels this year, so my time's more or less my own(aside from, y'know, doing anniversary-type stuff with the boyperson... :D )

Man. Dragon Con sounds like a whole load of intense fun. I Definitely can't see myself making it this year though. I only found out it existed by reading DP. I'm poor as dirt and sometimes more so if my Mom has a crisis... But I don't want to whine about my financial status.
Working some miracles, maybe I can make it next year! Go go miracles! :D

Last year was my third, and the first time I actually made it to any panels(had a few in previous years that I'd wanted to attend, and couldn't find 'em or got distracted(or both) and never made it). First panel I attended, ever, was the one I was on. This was made funnier by the fact that I've had awful stage fright for years, and get incredibly nervous if I have to draw attention to myself...and yet I keep volunteering for this sort of thing.

I asked before I got hired in if it would be a problem ...
I talked to everyone on up to the department manager ...
I asked again, before I bought plane tickets, just to be safe ...
Now less than a month out ... denied ...
And the silly shit of the situation?

Actually you shouldn't have to.
Simply explain that when you hired in you were guaranteed that time off due to certain commitments and You are going to keep those commitments.
If you already have all but 1 day of the time off it shouldn't be a problem to reschedule that day. If it is a problem just let them know you have time available and you might just have to have a case of airsickness and be unavailable for that day.

The manager couldn't authorise the time off and went to see the personnel manager.
The personnel manager couldn't authorise the time off and suggested consulting the general manager.
The general manager couldn't authorise the time off and said he's have to consult the managing director, who was away for the week.
Today, the managing director was back but "someone was waiting to talk to us. I'll nip over and see him in a minute and then hopefully you should have an answer." Half an hour after I should have gone home, no answer so I clocked off and left anyway. Holiday? Me? Not ****ing likely, is it?
Better luck with your clump of ____holes, Jak.

I'm actually having a scheduling problem. Everyone is scheduled to go out of town that weekend, and they really need me for Thursday/Friday. Combine that with a couple of sudden expenses that were *very* unexpected and basically destroyed my savings, and D*C is starting to fall down on the list of 'where my money goes.'

See, I think that's one of the annoying things. I have a great stock of wine that I could bring with, and for the most part, it's been free to obtain. I have over a case of wine that is just sitting around, waiting to be drunk. I could check it as a second bag. Regular food is easy, because I can raid my uncle's house and request a couple meals off him and his wife - they love having all the nieces and nephews around. But the flight itself, hotel room, and con tickets are a problem. There's just no wiggle room in my budget at all, now.
If the BF actually gets this one piece of software up and sold soon, maybe. If the ex-roommates decide to squeeze into their budget the money they owe me (I helped them with the deposit/1st month/RE fee when they moved into their current place), then I could do it. Otherwise...
I'm just very frustrated right now. The money is just out of my reach, and it's not coming any closer.
