A question for the queens subjects, or anyone else that might know. Is haggis worth making? is it just an excuse to drink more whiskey and stand around in non-biforcated menswear airing out the manly bits? The US government has it listed as not fit for human consumption.
Haggis is messy and personally, I find rather disgusting. Mince and tatties is just as good as Haggis and Clapshot for celebrating Burns Night.
Why you contemplating making it?

I saw alton brown make in on "good eats". it looked easy, and I figuresd it might be a decent starting point as a culinary theory. When I shoot deer I have lots of haggis making bits left over. It' would be nice to have something to use them for. maybe venison liver pate. A haggis recipe reads like really the ingredient list for really expensive dogfood.

why don't they fill the sheeps stomach with things that actually taste good?

Or just skip the stomach part. ;)
(I like tripe, don't have the time or patience to actually clean & prepare it myself).
I think there's frozen haggis available here.
We used to feed deer hearts & livers to either the dog or Grandpa; instead of haggis-making, what about trying sausages? I'd imagine one could use deer intestines for the casings, and a fair bit of the 'miscellaneous' pieces for filling, along with some of the 'goes into the hamburger bin because it's too small/tough for anything else' meat. Would probably need to add some pork fat or something, but that's normal...

Cooking is pretty much Alchemy. You take raw materials and make something that is pretty much impossible in nature. Most anything can be made palatable with the right techniques and skill. As far as Haggis goes? Made wrong, it is HORRENDOUS. Made right.. eh.. acquired taste as far as I'm concerned. I've had both the well prepared version and the ... Let's just say that it was a dare, I was drunk, and it STILL tasted like... lower organs...:puke:

Honestly, Shepards Pie and Fish & Chips, and general meat-and-carbs-maybe-some-peas-and-carrots is as far as I'll go in the whole "euro-food". And Curry, since it's been made by Indian immigrants in the UK for so long it's practically "Genuine UK Cuisine" as it is.

Aww now im curious bout what he said...
Haggis is all sheep innards and suet. And sheep generally have a stronger flavour than other kinds of meat. Have no idea what it would taste like if made from deer though.
Would say, if fancy giving it a go, then go for it, that way you won't be left wondering. It's what proper cooking is about, trying to make things edible.
