If you go back through the strips, you'll see that Jennie is very much a Transformers fan. If I recall correctly, she dropped $70 for Blitzwing (an old triple-changing Decepticon) on eBay a few years ago.

OP: I hate you and want you to die.

But on the other hand, I didn't want to see the movie in the first place, mostly because I was more a Captain Planet/Power Rangers kid than Transformers and transformers had only one interest to me: their toys were really cool. The show, I didn't like.

And since a blogger on girl-wonder.org gave it a nasty review I'm thinking it would only piss me off since I'd see all the underlying sexism/racism that the blogger pointed out. And then I mock the movie loudly while I watch it. And then the people around me don't like it and get loud and angry. So no seeing Transformers for the kitty.

Certain people will see Satan(*) in everything.

Classic definition ... Adversary ... so feminazis will see sexism in EVERYTHING a male does. Even if it's to do something polite that he would do for any human regardless of what resides between their thighs. This works the "You owe me because of what people who are dust and bone shards did to a distant ancestor. So ANYTHING you do will be racist in my eyes." crowd as well.

I think kitty! just ruined the movie for me too, because I'm a natural cynic.
(don't even get me started on what a Great White American Crusade propaganda-piece 300 was... )

Mind you... giant robots beating the crap out of each other? What do you expect? It's an obvious MAN-POWER piece. Might as well have two bodybuilders beating each other with giant phalluses (not criticizing - I don't mind thing being inane if they are obvious about it. I liked Deuce Bigalow, European Giggelo much better than What the Bleep Do We Know?, because I KNEW the first was going to be garbage, whereas the second was presented as some kind of Big New Thought).

Curious about the racist angle, though.

Heh, as for Satan as Adversary, it's much better when there's an anti-authority flavour to it. Propping up the Great Male Authoritarian Conspiracy isn't Satan's thing...

Uh..

Every time I see a post that either referances that site, or origionates from that site, it is almost always someone acting like an ass. Being an idiot is not gender specific, but it can rub off on you if you aren't careful.

And Kitty? Judge things for yourSELF. I saw the movie and it was FUN. If you feel like putting gender issues into a movie about TALKING CARS then you probably should not be out in public to begin with.

Before you start reacting to my board persona(non grata :al:), let me say that I have nothing against feminists or Women with strong personalities and/or opinions. But the very PREMISE of Racism and Sexism in an action movie/cartoon adaption is ludicrous. IF you are going to referance such a thing, the least you can do is provide a link to this nonsense.

And awaiting the Crazeyal blast for putting political overtones on a comic-book adaptation. :dgrin:

Oh I saw that, but I simply don't CARE. 300 was a pretty epic production, and the source material is drawn from a man known WORLDWIDE for putting over and undertones into a previously light hearted material. Miller probably ENCOURAGED and/or WROTE the undertones just to create controversy.

My point is... You shouldn't deny yourself the artistry because of some undertone. So WHAT 300 had some similarity to the BUSH dynasty? Did that make the pecs droop? Did it lower the amount of MAN-ASS I was exposed to? I think not! And some obscure comments or placements does NOT make Transformers less of a DAMN fun shoot em/Explodey/Big FRACKIN ROBOT FIST FIGHTING ton o FUN!!!

Now if you can show me where some character is saying "get thuh women folk unnah ground, we'll needs us some rapin herd!!" or other venom, I'd be with you. I SAW THE MOVIE!!! Kitty, you took someone's word, from a notably combative and arguably abusive source ta boot!

Hehe, good ol' Kubrick. :dgrin:
Oh, you mean you've seen Transformers... Never mind.

Al, I agree with taking things as they are, and know that if anyone is trying to get a point across in a SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER, they've got to pretty f**king blunt about it, given the target audience. And they wouldn't have the balls to do an informercial approach on that big budget (oh, there's What the Bleep again... culty infomercial bullshit).

Now, I do get kitty!'s point too... it's not that she necessarily believes or is defending the rant, or thinks that the movie necessarily contains these themes, it's that she's been exposed to the rant, which will brainworm through the movie. I had the same deal with the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... heard the Depp/MJ comparison before seeing it, and it blew that for me. Prefer Gene Wilder's interpretation anyways (love Depp, but...), but I wouldn't have made the mental jump if I hadn't been exposed to the meme.

For the record, it was the black goat cameo in the scene at the Persian HQ that really set my 'over the top' meter off in 300 (ooooh... teh bad mans are SATANICS and has teh orgys!). :d/:

I also made the mistake of watching 300 on DVD, so the overall impact didn't carry it along as well as it should have - I admit that I got kind of bored and was looking for nitpicks. But again, 90% of the viewing audience probably didn't realize that Persia = Iran, so it's a moot point for not being blunt enough, especially because there is some historical context there. You generally have to be in disagreeance with a propaganda theme to pick up on it; otherwise it's just positive reinforcement brain-candy. ;)

As for the other stuff...I honestly neither know nor care what someone says in their blog, I saw the movie and enjoyed it. The only thing I can think of that -might- possibly be construed as sexist is that none of the machines are referred to as female or have feminine voices(but y'know what? They're ROBOTS!), and the fact that there's really only one major female part among all the military guys and other protagonists. That said, the one female happens to be a good mechanic, does NOT run away from the fight, and has a juvie record(not exactly a goody-goody). Yeah, she's also hot and is shown in the very beginning as Dumb Jock's Girlfriend rather than a person in her own right...except she makes sure to point out that she is NOT his girlfriend at earliest opportunity.

I hate it when my work does not allow my family to participate in fun stuff -- screenings, parties, etc.. I get that they pay for it, but I'd be glad to chip-in for my spouse and kid, if they would be allowed to come. Otherwise, forget it, the company is just driving me away. I mean, why would I go, if I it takes me away from spending what little time I have with my family? Not their intention, I believe, but certainly the result.

Designated Sidekick is a pretty good blog, in my opinion, I've read feminist blogs that piss even me off. Biting Beaver made me angry after a while and I saw her for a really closed minded aggressive person, didn't even want to open lines of communication over [i forgot the issue] and it really pissed me off and I stopped reading her all together. And Aunt Twisty is a bit wacky, though she brings up good points. All together, Designated Sidekick is a good feminist blog to read.

Okay...

Reading the article now...

A) The "Humor" about the Spanish speaking member of the team. Hmmm.. How about.. HE WAS PROUD OF HIS HERITAGE??!?!? It's about perspective. If you WANT to see negative you will.

B) Okay.. for this we need a quote of the .. writing...

I do not need to have to see racial stereotypes of three different racial cliches.
OH HAI! POC character IT HAZ CRIME HISTORY. WTF does this even MEAN???!
OH HAI! I IZ OTHER POC! I CAN BE STEREOTYPICALLY REPRESENTATIVE OF RACIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WAYAN BROTHERS COMEDY
Remember kids, all black people are good with music, hate cops and an look like Fat Albert cast members. And all Black people must forEVERmore be Huxtables, because all the Urban quotes are racist.. really!
OH HAI! I iz…wait, they got the Australian right. Woah. No kangaroos, no g’day, no shrimp.
Excusing the fact that they breached the show don’t tell rule by telling us about said character’s skill set without ever actually demonstrating it on screen. Remember that part about finding negative if you ARE negative??? *points*
OH HAI! I IZ WHITE! WORLD BE SAVED BY ME!
Please tell me I wasn’t supposed to look at Sam “Cardboardbased Lifeform” Witiwikipedia and care about him. Tell me. Please. Just make him go away. Now we aren't allowed to have a white cast member. Got it

C) Voice actors of colour?? IT'S VOICE ACTING!!! HE WHO SOUNDS BEST WINS!!!!!

D)Girlbots? Girlbots were THIRD SEASON! She had a cameo, you don't see her, but for people who actually WATCHED.. it's her.

E) Call center scene. I have no clue why she'd call this racist.. frankly I do not CARE!!!

This person needs an attitude adjustment and sorry, a good spanking. Speaking your mind about feminine issues and rights? Go for it. In fact, good for you! Accusing filmakers of being racist for INCLUDING other races??? Time for bed young lady.. but.. MARCH!!! *whap* take that with you...

The rest, while perhaps they need fixin', are pretty much standard Hollywood schlock, especially being that this was a summer blockbuster. Yah, racial stereotypes are a crap device and lack imagination, but if change is to be made, it needs to happen at a broader level and be hammered directly at the industry... not addressed by one blogger at one (sorry, fangirls and fanboys) pretty trivial movie. You could pretty much throw the same charges at MOST video media. OTOH, when my friends don't get past the bouncers at a club because they are 'brown', THAT is racism, and pisses me off:

Whoa there! I am not being sexist. I am mealy expressing my amazement at a girl not being disgusted and talking down to me about the fact that I do like Transformers.
:d(:
I am possibley actually the victim of sexism my self due to the fact that up until a few years ago I had only met 3 girls who
a) didn’t think comics where stupid
2) didn’t think I was stupid for reading comics. (1 of the 3 girls was a girlfriend I got in to comics. 1 was a girl who just read comics and one was my mother (when she was a kid))
iii) accually would pick one up and have a read
:stupid:
In fact I would say that 80% of the most cutting, derogatory and debasing comments I have had thrown at me for liking comics where from women and almost all the people who ask THAT question "Aren’t comics, you know, for children?" are and have been women.
:poke:
I still find it odd that in the last 5 years or so the amount of women shopping for comics is almost equal to men now. And to be honest if I am chauvinist about anything it would be the strangeness that I feel when there are a dozen teen age girls gushing of this or that comic. and before you go all weird on me I mean whilst there is the happiness that my favourite medium is actually appealing to the opposite sex and the joy that it is having a new effect on that medium (I had a look at the Mary Jane comic aimed at the female market and now am waiting for the TPB as it was really cool) but there is real horror that some of the more ropy poor Japanese stuff is so popular (possibly because of the grotesque amount of boy on boy action going on but then I remember things like 1/2 Rama and am a tad more forgiving) and the fact that they tend to barge me out of the way.
:EJD:
However I read several web comics written by women. I like comics about women who don’t have spandexskin tight suits, breast enlargements and blond hair and have done for over 20 years (Terry and Jaime I am looking at YOU here). and I firmly believe it is essential that there more women like Jennie and also some sane women working and creating comics for the medium to continue growing and to reach its potential and a story medium not just a super hero medium
So please be understanding. I will probably always be amazed at girls liking comics etc. and that’s not down to me that’s down to the women I have met and how they have behaved towards us (me and comics).
:nono:

In the context of the movie, it's actually pretty funny and I usually cringe at racist type remarks. Now, envision about a dozen or so Marines sitting together chatting away about something when one pipes up to interject something and about a third of the way into his monolog he changes over to Spanish. The rest of the guys groan and roll their eyes. The leader pipes up, dude you know we can't understand a thing you're saying, speak English! The Spanish speaker retorts with a somewhat passioned filled response about how could they not like hearing his native language as it's so beautiful and then he breaks off into Spanish again. My point is, you'd only be offended by the statement because you want to be. From the movie you get the distinct feeling that this is a group of brothers who are giving each other a hard time. We're overhearing a conversation that is meant for their ears alone. If this had been a different type of scene where a Spanish speaker was walking and talking with other Spanish speakers, and someone, not of their group started giving them a hard time, shouting them down to speak English, then yeah I'd agree too with the racist point.

greyloch
08-02-2007, 01:20 PM

Yeah, the "speak English" comment was set in the tone of buddies giving each other a hard time (i.e., razzing). I do it to my friends when they start speaking in "techno-babble" (well, in terms I don't recognize :p) and tell them, "For those of us who do speak normal English, please translate what the fuck you were just saying."

I don't get how this is racist. The U.S. armed forces speak in "militarese" which is based in English (kinda, sorta, maybe, I'd have to kill ya if you understood what we were talking about). ;)

But back to the Transformers movie: Great special effects; lots of well-done fight scenes; thin on plot. Pretty much what I expected and I'm happy with that (see my LJ for what I did during the Transformers movie (http://greyloch.livejournal.com/44068.html)). I wasn't expecting Shakespeare, this is a movie about a toy from the 80s that if done right will help sell more toys. I just find it funny (in a surreal kind of way) that none of the German car manufacturers (Volkswagon & Porsche) would allow their car designs to be used in a war-type movie (hence why Bubblebee wasn't a VW Beetle and Jazz wasn't a Porshe).

WTF is up with that shit??

Rapscallion, thanks for posting the vgcats. At the end of the movie when they're looking out over the sunset and the two human couple people are cuddling on Bumblebee's hood I let out a loud "EW!" and the guy beside me looked at me funny.
I liked the movie but I try not to take comic movies too seriously. As in, I don't expect them to follow the original format. I thought Ghost Rider was HILARIOUS. The bad guys looked like they got lost on the way to their vampire larp. And the flaming motorcycle speedboat scene could only be better if he had literally jumped a shark. I loved it. There's some movies that you have to turn your brain off to enjoy; League of extraordinary gentlemen, Constantine, ...I should be drawing cartoons.

i gotta agree with you on that one Jennie. Better i think to enjoy something like this just as an opportunity to dribble at giant robots beating the tar out of each other/guys on flaming motorcycles/Huge red dude beating demon ass etc etc.

Lets face it, nothing is going to match the memories you have of whatever classic series you used to watch as a kid because guess what, you're not a kid anymore . Ah, thank you for saying that! At first I thought it was weird when you just see them on the car making out, but then the real kicker is when the camera zooms out and it's the whole crew just sitting there watching.

Also, why was Bumble Bee voiced by someone who sounds like Robin Williams? It made me completely lose connection with his character.

Don't get me wrong though, the movie was awesome. Michael Bay may not be a good director, but he was the right guy for the part. Tonight it's off to the Simpsons movie. How I was convinced to actually pay money for it I'll never know...

Prime was probably starting to look at the sky as they had just started to embark on a petting session which probably made him feel a bit uncomfortable. As for the others I am not sure if Ironhide and Ratchet are voyeurs or just hugely embarrassed. Bumblebee however, is a proper pervert and probably asked to stay with the boy as his car because he is trying to get a three way going. I bet he is going to start getting in to “Nitro” abuse as well.

As a kid, I played with Transformers, but I watched Voltron. Oh and Jem. :D
My fella is into his Transformers biiiigtime. We went to see the movie with a bunch of like-minded fellow geek mates, and we all loved it. The best part was them stomping around in the garden, I nearly died!
My fella got Blackout from the film (I believe he also had a very hard time getting him to transform) and one other, I forget who. They're nicely done I think.
I know one mate of mine who is utterly, utterly TF mad, and has pretty much every one ever made MIB, including the Japanese market ones by Takara (Man I wish I could see his collection in person!) who ranted on and on and on about how this film was Not Transformers and Michael Bay is an arse and all this. Meh, the purists were fussing from the moment the movie was announced. These are the same crackheads who complain about how it will screw up continuity (nevermind that there's already several different ones). Getting back on topic somewhat, I was wondering what Transformer do each of you consider your favorite from when you were a kid.

For me, it was Sideswipe, the Red Lamborghini Countach from the original show. The Countach was one of my dream cars in middle and high school (the Ferrari Testarossa was the other).

Oh, that's cool as hell!! Love the Optimus Prime transformation.

As for my favorite, I'll have to go with Tracks. Can't go wrong with a Corvette that can fly. Or Springer. It's a toss up between those two.

And yes, I still have almost all of the original G1 Transformers. I still remember going to TRU and asking if they had any Transformers yet. They replied, "What are Transformers?"

:king:

As much as I love and hate that GM got the exclusive I must say that I like the 70's Camero Bumblebee in the movie better. I think that it got across his attitude better than the new model Camero.

I loved them both. I wish they put out both versions of the toy.

Not that I can afford to buy either right now... *sigh*.

I had fun watching the Transformers movie, but I was busy reliving my childhood, and my crush on Optimus Prime. I didn't think it was any more sexist than any other Hollywood movie out there, probably even less so, and it was a hell of a lot more entertaining.

I had a crush on Asterix and Lucky Luke as a kid. It never occurred to me to have a crush on a robot, lol, but Optimus does have a very nice voice...

Yeah you really can't blame a movie for product placement when its based around a set of toys that spawned a cartoon after all. :D

Optimus Primal was a Chimp, not a Gorilla. Unless you're talking about the Transmetal version. He was also a bat.

greyloch
08-19-2007, 01:19 PM
Optimus Primal was a gorilla for Beast Wars (original, transmetal, and transmetal 2) and a gorilla for Beast Machines. There was a TM2 toy called Optimus Minor which was a monkey (don't think it was a chimp). Optimus Minor was also in the re-done Beast Wars comicbook mini series.

Most people don't know this, but the first Beast Wars incarnation of Optimus Primal (before the TV series started) was a bat and Megatron was a crocodile/alligator. I remember seeing them as a two-pack in the mid 1990's at Kaybee. At the same time, Hasbro was test marketing a line called Transformers: Machine Wars.
