ok, I'll put this bluntly...

My webcomic: <insert life here> (http://www.drunkduck.com/insert_life_here/)

This other webcomic that I came across today when I typed my comic's name into the search box on thewebcomiclist.com: Insert Life Here (http://www.insertlifehere.net/) (don't be fooled by the current page, it's a guest strip. my art is better!)

The problem is that they seem to be an older comic than me. And they have an independent site and stuff. And I thought I was being original dammit!!

I like my comic name though. I put a lot of effort into thinking it up.
I'm not really sure what to do here...

do 100 stips and grab copyrights then he/she cant say a thing since you copyrited the name first, it would be a pain since you made such a nice banner that i added lol

DarkPirateShea
03-04-2008, 07:18 PM
hmm, that might work. i just searched the u.s. copyright site and the name doesn't seem to be taken as of yet. do i need 100 strips first? or is it just a good idea to have at least 100 first?

copywriting comes down to whom has the most money.

there is a fee to file, however they have you on being around longer. typically this sort of thing is seen in big business arena.

But just be prepared if you try and fight it out. chances are nobody wil care just be a little confused.

toreador
03-04-2008, 11:46 PM
you just need enough for a book full so 100 of your longstrips is more than enough considering a most webcomic books are less than 50 on book one.

EDIT: i just did a little checking, your name is slightly difrent due to the < > arrows so it doesnt count as the same thing so i dont think theres a need to worry about it for now. if you want more about copyrighting then should listen to this.

Ok, soooo...
dude that owns the other comic messaged me about the title.

So now I gotta think up a new frikin title for my webcomic. *grumble*

I mean, I figured I would have to anyway. I even pulled out my list from when I was originally thinking up a title. There just isn't enough difference between "<insert life here>" and "Insert Life Here" for this all to work out. So I was pretty much planning on getting to work on changing it anyway.

But, what I want to know is how did the guy find my comic? I mean really, he couldn't've found out on his own, cuz what are the odds that he randomly finds it now, right after I find his comic? I'm not pointing any fingers, cuz maybe there's something I've overlooked here that someone can point out for me. Or maybe it is just a coincidence in timing. But I can't get it out of my head that you all are the only one's that I've mentioned this to.

Creators usually Google themselves to see if anyone is talking about their work.

DarkPirateShea

Yeah but I find the timing very coincidental. I've had the comic up for a good number of months now.

I've looked at your comic, but not the other on. The only reason you'd have to change you title is if they came first and if there are glaring simularities in the comics. Your title is slightly different and the fact that you published your comic on the web works as a copywrite. If there are no glaring simularities between the content of your work, don't worry about it and go on about your business. If there is, then you probably should change the name.

So, if there aren't, and you keep the name and guy decides he wants to be persistent about this. Tell him to go play in his sandbox, and you'll stick to yours. As long as he can't prove that you attempted in any way to copy his idea or content then he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

weblogs...

they say alot of things such as who visited your site and where they came from.

being that you visited his site and being that you posted links here to both sites it is possible someone went directly from your site to his. which is going to be a big WTF when he goes looking through his logs.

if your a conspiracy theorist you really don't want to know what kind of things a website can know about you...:shhh:

if your a conspiracy theorist you really don't want to know what kind of things a website can know about you...:shhh:

Which is why I enjoy visiting gelbooru before going to sites like foodtv.com or hgtv.com ... just to fuck with the status quo.

It's also why I tend to put a comment before any links to a .gov website. They're sure to be logging referrer URLs, aren't they?

"Anythin' new?"
"Just more people browsing the most wanted, a few text logs from people posing as 14-yr-old girls on sex chat sites and about two hundred hits from some site called The Devil's Panties. I've no idea what that's about. The firewall won't let me view it."
"I'll have to check with the supervisor ... or the intern."
"The intern's probably the better bet."
"Yeah. Want me to have her bring you a coffee?"

DarkPirateShea
03-07-2008, 12:37 AM
There's also the fact that he used the phrase "it has been brought to my attention". Which leads me to believe someone told on me.

But even so. He had the name first, and his comic is more established. And although there is a slight difference to the names, it's just symbols. and the symbols don't really translate to things like web adresses and spoken word...

So, I'm working on thinking of a new comic name now.
Suggestions are welcome.

Milady..

The title you describe decries a common thread among teens. "Here I am.. Now what??"

The idea is to promote empathy in the reader. Everyone has been awkward, everyone has "weird" friends.

But you AREN'T everyone...

You are Unique.

You are strange.
You are Femme.

Yes.. this is a common theme.. but only in the circle de `ART...

Therefore.. I offer this as a title to your artwork.

Normally Strange

I think it suits you.

Why coriander?

And after some narrowing down, this is the list I came up with while waiting for psych class to start today.
~Slightly Psychotic
~Just Crazy Enough
~Something Like Normal
~Slightly Off Center
~Brain Bleach
~Optional Extras
~ (and of course Al's suggestion) Normally Strange

I like mine best (o' course..:al:) but the only other one I think works is "Something like Normal". The theme of the comic is "Slice of life" with a bit o college weirdo thrown in. But.. it's a little too close to the other comic.. you should break free from any comparison.

DarkPirateShea

I like to think of the theme as "my life if you filtered it though my brain first".

Erm ...

Okay, that didn't help.

Nope, still no ideas.

Are we meant to vote on the list?

"Something like Normal" would be my choice.

"Within One Standard Deviation"?

I'm taking tallies on votes from the list, but I'm also writing down any suggestions that I think are okay.

Good comic titles are generally, short (no more than maybe four words), clever, and they flow well. Whenever I'm trying to think of whether something sounds well as a comic title, I always try saying it in my head in a sentence. Like, " Do you read ______ ?"

are you guys talking about coriander? that comic is awesome.

and why coriander... cause I like it!

anyways, speaking off combining titles. I like optional normality. Since normally strange conveys more the sentence that this comic is nomally strange, which isn't that good of a selling point.

Optional normality. Voting wise I told you what I think last night. If you need a reminder though you can always ask.

Happenis likes just strange enough.

my suggestion - "Oddly normal"

DarkPirateShea
03-08-2008, 04:44 AM
Coriander is a pretty word, but it's got no meaning behind it. Google says it's an herb or something.

And I don't much like the word "Normality", it doesn't flow well as part of a title.

"Oddly Normal" sounds like something that would work when I first read it, but then after I think about it, it kinda makes it sound like it's a comic about normal people. Which it totally isn't.

I'm finding myself liking "something like normal" or probably a stupid idea but it relates to what you were saying about it being reality if passed through your brain first. So how about "Shea goggles" you know like beer goggles instead it's shea instead of beer...I'll be quiet now.

Ok, it's sort of a thought process, with lots of adding and removing and movign around, so here is the new list as of this moment. With some of Melody's ideas in there too. You guys tell me what your opinions are.

~Slightly Off Center
~Something Like Normal
~Something Like Strange (?? a deviation of the one above)
~Strange Candy
~Brain Candy
~Simply Strange
~A Little Like Life
~Advocating Adventure
~Lucid Moments (not sure this is quite right, but it seems like a good start to a thought process)

-Candy From Strangers
remove- Strange Candy (taken)

"Something Like Normal" gets my vote...

"Strange Candy" is kinda-sorta taken by Okashina Okashi (http://strangecandy.net), in addition to being the title of a Laurel K. Hamilton book.

"Candy from Strangers" might make an interesting comic name, though...
